Composite materials (or even composites for short) come engineering materials mass produced from either deuce or additional components. the single component is typically a hard fibre like fiberglass, quartz, kevlar, Dyneema or carbon fibre that gives the material its tensile strength, while an additional component (known as the matrix) is often the resin such as polyester, or epoxy that binds the fibres together, transferring bucket from either broken fibers to unbroken ones & between fibers that are non oriented along lines of tension. Likewise, unless a matrix chosen is especially flexible, it prevents a fibers from either buckling in compression. A bit of composites apply an aggregate instead of, or additionally to, fibers.

Within terms of stress, any fibers serve to resist tension, the matrix serves to resist shear, and completely materials present service to resist compression, including any aggregate.

Composite materials may be divided into deuce independent categories unremarkably known as short pulp reinforced materials & continous pulp reinforced materials. Continous reinforced materials may typically be the superimposed or even laminated structure.

Shocks, impact, loadings or even recurrent cyclic stresses might stimulator the laminate to separate at a interface between deuce shells, a affliction called delamination. Single fibers potty seperate from either a matrix e.g. pulp pull-out.

Examples of composite materials:
Fibre reinforced plastics: Classified by nature and severity of fiber: Wood (cellulose fibers in the lignin and hemicellulose matrix) Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic or CRP Glass-fibre reinforced plastic or GRP (informally, "fiberglass") Classified by matrix: Thermoplastic Composites long fiber thermoplastics or long pulp reinforced thermoplastics glass mat thermoplastics Thermoset Composites

Metal matrix composites or MMCs: Cermet (ceramic and metal) White cast iron Hardmetal (carbide in metal matrix) Metal-intermetallic laminate Ceramic matrix composites: concrete Reinforced carbon-carbon (carbon fibre in the black lead matrix) Bone (hydroxyapatite reinforced with collagen fibers) Organic matrix/ceramic total composites Mother of Pearl Syntactic foam Asphalt concrete Chobham armour (see composite armour)

Engineered wood Plywood Oriented strand board Trex Weatherbest (recycled wood fiber inside polythene matrix) Pycrete (sawdust in ice matrix)
